Safety First
We all do the best we can, right? Until we know better...then, we do better.
Until recently, I didn't think twice about the products I was using. I assumed that if I was able to purchase it, someone must have checked and approved it as safe enough for humans. It didn't occur to me that the lotion, skincare, and sunscreen I was slathering all over my body contained chemicals with direct links to cancer, fertility issues, and endocrine disorders. I had no idea that whatever I put on my body gets into my bloodstream within 26 seconds. 26 SECONDS!!!
I didn't know that the European Union bans 1400 ingredients. The U.S. bans 11. Yes, you read that correctly. 1400 vs. 11. Did your jaw just drop as mine did when I first learned this? Thought so.
I also didn't know that there have been no federal laws passed since 1938. Oh, and it's a 1.5 page document for a $200 Billion industry. So, what does that mean? Companies can put whatever they want in our products including body lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, cosmetics, and baby products. Scary, right?
So, here's the GOOD NEWS. Someone is finally doing something about it. If you haven't heard of Beautycounter yet, you will start to hear about it more and more. They are making MAJOR waves in Washington fighting for safer laws to protect all of us. Not only that, they created safer products and have a list of over 1500 ingredients that they will NEVER use. It's called their NEVER LIST. Also, they are partnered with EWG (the non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment), The Breast Cancer Fund, and Healthy Child Healthy World. They are also partnered with GOOP, JCrew, and several others. They also hired Mia Davis, the former Director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, who helped get BPA out of bottles. Mia ensure every ingredient is screened for safety. Pretty cool, right?
There are many 'safe' options out there. What is so special about Beautycounter? Not only do they take the guesswork out of searching for safer options, but the products actually perform! Christy Coleman, a celebrity make-up artist and one of the first to clean up her kit, heads up Performance Division. She tests Beautycounter products in Hollywood on the Red Carpet, as well as on Victoria's Secret & runway models.
The moral of the story. Whether you use Beautycounter or other products, please check the safety of your products at ewg.org/skindeep.
